halle
berry monster ball is one of those rare combinations when a role
fits an actress. Berry had to convince the filmmaker to
get this role and she was right. Why do actors and
actresses get into the movie business? There are many
reasons, but one is making movies like Monster's Ball.
Berry and
Thornton are great in this movie. The movie shows a
culture in each of their character's lives that takes a tragedy
to make them see other points of view, especially with Hank.
There is a
culture of hate in Hank's family life. By the third
generation, with his son, hate's grip is losing its power.
Artistic details that show this: Hank throwing up at
opening of movie introduces this culture of hate in his
life. The second throwing up after a night with Leticia
shows the second half of his life, where he makes the conscious
choice to nurture a culture of love despite imperfect lives--as
shown by throw up. Another great artistic detail is Hank
eating ice cream. Watch how his life changes each time he
eats a bowl of ice cream. The first, Buck has his grip on
him. The second, he meets Leticia. The third, he and
Leticia get to know each other. The last, he gives a spoon
of ice cream to Leticia and she accepts--their life
together. Seeing such details in a movie make it much more
fun to watch. There is one constant in Hank's life, the
plastic spoon, things he likes and won't let go of.
