Every
time
you see a great movie, you find yourself wanting to talk about
it or write about it. halle
berry in monster ball shows the many sides of her character,
Leticia. She is a mother doing what she knows how to raise
a son who shows a troubled family history through his
overeating. She works as a waitress to make ends meet, and
this isn't going well financially, but it shows she is making
the effort as shown when her car breaks down and she simply
starts walking with her son to make it to work. She has a
husband who dies by electric chair and this makes her
calloused. However, a tragedy brings out her need to be
loved. At the first love scene, she simply wants to feel
good after a very weak moment when her son dies. Hank,
also is in a weak moment after his son kills himself, and thus,
Leticia and Hank make love. However, their weakness at
their first love scene becomes a conscious strength in the
second. That is, in the second, he makes the conscious
choice and effort to truly woo her and she lets him, even after
finding out the truth of Hank's upbringing as portrayed by Buck
and after learning her connection with Hank after seeing her
ex-husband's drawings. Why does she decide to continue her
relationship with Hank? She recognizes he means it and it
is he who comes to her and not what has been fed to him by
Buck. She also knows that they both have imperfect lives
and together they can do "what's right." This is
possible because they are two individuals who have made
conscious choices because of strength in themselves--love and
self-respect, something they can live with and turn to in the
future.
One of the
crucial scenes in this movie is the Leticia and Buck
scene. Actresses and actors simply must pull through these
kinds of scenes and Berry does a great job. Also, Thornton
is great in this movie. He's been a good provider and thus
is fanatical about doing a perfect job but has lost sight of
"raising" his son. He shows passion in his
work. He becomes more low-key and not so uptight after he
deals with his son's death because no matter how perfect he
makes his job, his personal life is not perfect and he finally
sees that life in general cannot be "imprisoned" into
perfection. So he starts his journey to do "what's
right."
