Joe Wright
gave us Keira Knightley in Pride and Prejudice and in
2007 Joe Wright gives us Keira Knightley in Atonement.
When a director finds a muse and makes movies like these,
this is a very good thing.
Atonement
is one of those movies that shows why film is art and Atonement
is up there in visual beauty, tone, story, acting, feeling,
history and more.
Beauty in the
woman form is ever present in the fountain scenes with Knightley
as the model. McAvoy
walking in a field of red flowers (see note on red poppies
below)—how lucky to find a field
like this to use in the film!
There’s Briony as the adult nurse walking down a hall
while the lights turn on behind her.
Every shot in this movie, including the tragedies of war,
and the beach scenes of soldiers, are so well done.
When you see a beautiful shot, how it’s framed and so
on, you appreciate the director’s vision.
There is a
scene of Briony and a fellow nurse talking about how Briony has
“mystery.” This
movie has this “lighting of a need for atonement” about it,
supported by the fact the storyline isn’t linear.
The only linear thing is Briony’s haircut!
You find
yourself appreciating movies again and again when you see art
like this.
[Note on the
red poppies in the film: "The museum entrance hall
features a glass bridge across 9,000 red poppies, each
representing 1,000 military fatalities." - http://www.visitkc.com/visitor_info/whats_new/index.cfm?page=liberty_memorial.htm.
