guest appearance on Letterman to promote Bourne Ultimatum, he
talked about how Hollywood likes to play baseball--that is,
there is the "three strikes and you're out" game
placed on actors and actresses. Imagine the stress and
pressure. It makes Jeremy Piven's character in the HBO
show, Entourage, look calm. With the Bourne movies, damon hasn't struck
out. In football terms, he was able to gain enough yardage
for a first down.
In the first
Bourne Identity movie, there was a crucial scene, at the yacht
where Jason Bourne's program was starting to show a
"bug" in which Jason starts his search for who he
is. In the Ultimatum movie, he finds out more. It's
a search for wanting to know oneself, and this is something
everyone can relate with. This theme is placed on the
action stage that damon succeeds in performing.
This action
stage is present in the latter sequence of Ultimatum. If
Jason Bourne simply hadn't called the CIA officer about how he
is in the officer's office taking out the contents of the safe,
Bourne would have simply slipped away quietly unnoticed.
Fortunately, he made the call and the audience can enjoy an
action sequence mixed with Bourne's realization of his
beginnings. That is, Bourne doesn't mind being
caught. He is good at getting out of tough
situations. There is always a window to crash into. It's who he is. Because of the call, he gets to
face once again, his assassin, who decides to do what Bourne did
at the yacht in the first movie. This act becomes the
heart of the Bourne movies, the need to feel and question things
as Bourne asks, "Do you even know why you're killing."
Ultimatum
also resonates with things going on today in this world.
Consider Julia Stiles' character and how even when "she is
one of us" and "not knowing the situation" as the
female CIA officer argues doesn't stop the other CIA officer
from putting a hit on Stiles. The movie questions the
people of power and how they make use of their power.
