In
the beautiful movie, Hero,
Jet Li energizes the screen, along with his costars. Imagine being a member of the group who had to pick the
“hero” for this movie and of all the choices, Jet Li was
chosen. Why?
First and foremost, this character must look convincing
of his martial arts abilities.
This criteria must first be met.
Next, can he act the part?
How about chemistry with the other actors?
And so on the questioning goes and the choice for Jet Li
was on target.
A darker role
was in Fearless
where again, Jet Li, exhibits his ability to integrate martial
arts for entertainment.
We all are
aware of the ropes, slow-motion, choreography, etc. to make
these movies, but you forget these or they remain in the
background as you enjoy the movie when the film rolls.
In the movie,
The
Forbidden Kingdom, Jet Li has two roles, the playful
Monkey King and the serious monk.
Add Jackie Chan
into the picture and the atmosphere gets lightened a bit. Li fits well with his role as the monk, especially when
balanced with the more playful fighter of the Monkey King.
This balance
of serious fighting with some playfulness is shown when Li and
Chan have a wonderful fight sequence in the temple.
Meditative or
“drunken,” both show their martial arts abilities and their
acting, not to be displayed and looked at, but to invite the
audience to join in and be entertained along with them.
Example of
inviting you in: Li is shown meditating in the
temple. He is so quiet and still that yes, you believe he
is really meditating and you are made to feel that you, too, can
be as such and be included. It's wonderful to be invited
into such a state of quiet and stillness.
