There
was a documentary where Jackie Chan was sharing his contribution
to martial arts movies, i.e., the use of props during the
martial arts fighting scenes.
He explains how chairs, tables, lamps, and the like are
consciously used to add to a fighting scene.
Unlike the “Bruce Lee” method of fighting literally
with the fist, Chan makes use of whatever is around him.
If there is an ottoman nearby, for example, for sure it
will be used in Chan-like ways not only for entertainment and
humor but
also for the skill involved.
We’ve all
seen crashing chairs and tables in the movies such as in the westerns but Chan’s
contribution is how he has incorporated this in the movies that
include martial arts fighting scenes, a new take on the familiar
westerns where a cowboy may fall from a balcony and come
crashing onto a table on the saloon floor.
Also, while Bruce Lee may have used “traditional”
martial arts weapons, Chan has introduced non-traditional
“weapons” or "everyday props" for a new way of
looking at martial arts fighting scenes.
In the movie,
The
Forbidden Kingdom with Jet
Li, there are a few scenes where Chan uses
the young man as a prop while fighting.
A wonderful
Jackie Chan movie: Legend
of the Drunken Master
and of course, the Rush
Hour movies where his ideas of props as weapons come in
handy.
