George
Clooney in Michael Clayton movie, written and directed by Tony
Gilroy, has many strong scenes including his scene with the U
North legal executive at the end of the movie. It's an
important scene and you actually forget it's Clooney acting but
is instead Michael Clayton, a character with so many levels in
his life, balanced and imbalanced.
Another great
scene is when Clayton is in a moment of despair after the
birthday party and he looks at his son for hope as he talks to
his son in the car. These are just a few. Clooney
was well chosen for this role and he does a great job.
Also, this
movie lives up to what Tony
Gilroy spoke about when he was guest speaker at Screenwriting
Expo 5 (included in Screenwriting Collection). Gilroy
makes you think Clayton will do one thing and this is possible
because of past behavior but then Gilroy turns the story and you
end up thinking--that's good!
A man leaving
the theater said that this movie was one of the best he's seen
this year. I agree!
How the movie
begins with the pictures shown and the tone that's set, starts
your expectations at a high level and it stays there!
Gilroy,
during his guest speaker session, mentioned that his father who
was a screenwriter, advised his two sons not to go into the
movie business because it's such a tough business. Gilroy
said he started as a writer and now is a filmmaker and his
brother is a film editor--credited for editing this movie.
This is one instance when it's good not to listen to your
father!
Thanks to
Clooney and Gilroy, they make loving the movies fun! And
on top of that, the movie ended just in time so you can pick up
your kids from school!
