Daniel Day-Lewis

When Daniel Day-Lewis takes on a job, he takes it wholeheartedly, and the end result is recognition from his peers via nominations for awards.  Not only that, this actor is just plain talented.  You can believe his American accent.

His character in There Will Be Blood very much dislikes hypocrites and he shows it in the last scene with his brother and the end scene.  The irony is that, he, too, is somewhat of a hypocrite, but at least he admits it as shown in his last scene with his son.

He tells Eli, the young minister he despises, that Paul, Eli’s brother is the smart one, like Daniel Plainview, Daniel-Lewis’ character.  And it is the smart ones, the ones that have a lot of money, that have the power, even the power to murder, thus the title, “There Will Be Blood.”

This drive to be rich and powerful is shown in the beginning scene.  If you have ever visited Death Valley National Park, and read about the stories of the mines and prospectors, the character of Daniel Plainview gives you a glimpse into the kind of men who went venturing into Death Valley in search of wealth.

In this movie, instead of gold, it is instead, oil.  It’s a very clear, and loud statement:  oil is power.  It is so powerful it can go and kill whenever it pleases.  This rage in Daniel Plainview comes out when his “brother” and the young minister go to him to live off of his work.  Thus, to become a Daniel Plainview, you must be smart, succeed, make lots of money and thus have power, become a murderer, do things for show only—hypocrite, use people, lonely.  Still, one wonders, did the blood that was spilled have to be spilled?  Even if Daniel Plainview feels they deserve it?  Plainview could have chosen not to commit the murders, but because he feels he has so much power, he can, at whim.

When he says, "I'm finished," there seems to be a double meaning--i.e., the person he kills is finished and at the same time, Daniel Plainview is also finished.
